IHL Students: Prepare for monthly enrollment verification

The date is almost here!  New this school year, Post-9/11 GI Bill students need to verify their attendance each month. Starting with terms after Dec. 17, 2021, students attending an Institution of Higher Learning (IHL) facility will be required to verify their enrollment on a monthly basis to continue receiving Monthly Housing Allowance and/or kicker payments. This requirement has been in effect for Non-College Degree students since Aug. 1, 2021.

If you have a US mobile phone number on file with VA, and you’re actively enrolled at an IHL, you should receive a text after Dec. 17 inviting you to opt-in to text verification. This is the simplest and most efficient way to verify monthly enrollment. To learn more, visit the monthly enrollment verification webpage.

Passage of REMOTE Act extends protections for GI Bill students

On December 21, 2021, President Biden signed the “Responsible Education Mitigating Options and Technical Extensions Act” or the “REMOTE Act” into law.

This law extends the various COVID-19 protections for GI Bill students from December 21, 2021, to June 1, 2022. In part, this means that students who were attending a course that was converted to online training because of COVID-19, and were getting paid the resident rate, may continue to train online, and will continue to receive the resident housing rate until June 1, 2022.
